Umbrella plants

Question
I have two umbrella plants, one green, the other green and yellow. I have noticed that the branch stems on each appear to be growing roots. Do you know what causes this and what do I need to do to prevent it happening again? Will I damage the plant if I cut them off? I have had both these plants for about 10 years and have never seen this before.

Many thanks

Denise

Answer
Hi Denise,

Those are called adventitious roots because they appear in an unusual place. There is no particular cause for this phenomenon. It simply happens occasionally and there is no way to prevent it. Adventitious roots serve no practical purpose for your potted plants, so there is no harm in removing them or leaving them.

I have written an article on Schefflera care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
