Spots on my dragon tree

Question

A few weeks ago I put some new soil round the base of my two dragon trees as it had sunk a little on both.  Since then creamy white spots have appeared on leaves at the top and the newest leaves have dried out and gone brown and papery.  Some leaves have gone yellow and fallen off.  I have had them for several years and would be most upset if I've killed them.  Also, the same soil was used to top up my rubber plant and it is unaffected.  Please help!
         Many thanks

Answer
Hi Amelia,

Remove all of the soil you added ASAP. Soil naturally settles and sometimes even exposes a few top roots that quickly heal over to protect them from exposure to the air. This is the way nature takes care of this problem. By adding soil, you have deprived the roots below of the oxygen they require. The added soil is staying too moist and causing root rot. It is also possible that the soil you used is contaminated, but there is no way I can tell. In any case, remove all the soil you added, but don't compound the problem by repotting or replacing any of the original soil.

Rubber plants are hardier than Dracaena marginatas so I am not surprised it is thus far unaffected. Even so, it would be best if you removed that added soil as well.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
