dragon palm

Question
I have a dragon palm that i have had for about 4 years it is in a pot about the size of 5 gallon bucket one of the stalks is almost touching the ceiling can i cut it and reroot it?

Answer
Jessica,

I believe that your dragon palm is a Dracaena marginata. Please put that in Google and then click on images to confirm that it is. You said "one of the stalks", how many are there?

If it is a Dracaena marginata it can be cut off, dipped in rooting hormone that you can get at your nearest garden center and then inserted in a fresh pot of soil and if it was April, May or June you would have a 90% chance of it rooting. Because the days are now getting shorter the plant is slowing down on it's growth. In another month it will grow very little during the winter because of the short days and there is only a 30% chance that it will root.

If it were mine I would wait till April 1st to cut it off and try to root it. When you cut it off to root it you should cut at least 3 feet off and remove the leaves (if there are any) off the lower 8 inches of stalk. Then dip it into the rooting hormone and insert it into a fresh 8 inch pot of soil. Set it near an east window so it gets some sun in the morning. It should root within 8 weeks. The old trunk that you cut this off of will put out 1-5 new side shoots and grow a new top. If it were mine I would pinch off any more than 2 shoots at the most. If there are too many shoots they do not grow well. One or two shoots do the best.

If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck!
