neglected ponytail palm

Question
My cats knocked a pot of 4 ponytail palms in a 6" pot off behind my window shelf and when I discovered them, one was completely brown and the others only had a little green. I separated them and re-potted the 3 green ones in 3" pots, using cactus soil. Should I soak the soil now or wait to water after they start showing growth?

Answer
Bill,

Soak them immediately but then drain all excess water and do not water again until they are totally dry, insert a bamboo skewer in each pot and cut it off an inch above the soil. When you think it may be dry pull the skewer out and check. If the skewer is dry over 3/4ths of the way own water the plant, If it is still moist wait a few days and check it again. These plants will start growing roots to fill those pots before they grow new tops. Good luck.
