Insect pests on Stephanotis

Question
I have looked after a Stephanotis floribunda plant for years and generally it is healthy but in the last couple of years it has been invaded by tiny insects which I think are thrips. I Tend just to wash off the insects with just water but alas they return so I give the plant an insecticide Sybol and later spray the plant with water. However no sooner I have got rid of these insects the plants leaves become mottled and dull and sometimes the leaves turn yellow. Can you give me some advice.
Simon G.

Answer
Hi Simon,

I need better information here. First I need proper identification of the plant pests. Can you describe what you are seeing that makes you suspect thrips? A photo would be even better. I need to know because different plants pests require different treatments.

A have never heard of Sybol nor could I find any information on it via an internet search.

Most plant pests leave some evidence of physical damage to the plant even after they are removed. This damage is permanent and it can cause some leaves to yellow and die completely. No pesticide can fix damage done by plant pests. Pesticides can only eradicate the pests themselves.

Get back to me with better information and I will be able to help you better.

I have written an article on plant pests that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
