transplanting a pine tree

Question
JIM, I RECENTLY TRANSPLANTED A 8 YEAR OLD PINE TREE, AND THE NEEDLES HAVE RECENTLY TURNED BROWN AND FELL OFF. i WOULD SAY THAT STILL 70% IS STILL GREEN. I HAVE BEEN WATERING IT FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES TWO TIMES A DAY, AND SO FAR THE TREE HASN'T GOTTEN ANY WORSE. I HOPE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HELP ME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. OH AND THE GENERAL LOCATION IS IN MICHIGAN OR SHADE I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MEANT WHEN YOU ASKED THAT.

Answer
transplanting a tree this large during warmer months can be risky. What you are seeing is the tree exhibiting stress from the transplant. Pines have two sets of needles and what you are seeing is the tree has dropped one set. If you still have 70% green needles the tree is doing OK. I would mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches of pine straw keeping the mulch away from the trunk its elf. This will help hold moisture and also keep some of the heat away from the roots. Water every other day with 1 inch of water until cooler fall weather sets in. Place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Or you can purchase a root water probe and water with it. The water needs to get down to 8- 12 inches in the soil to keep the roots moist.

Since this is a web site that gets questions from all over the world it is very helpful to know what country, state the problem is occuring.
