Indoor Norwegian Pine Tree

Question
We too adopted a small pot containing two Norwegian Pine trees about six years ago.  They are about 8 feet tall now and take up more room than we really have to share in our Middle Tennessee home.  Is it safe to transplant these outdoors in February without killing them?  They are healthy specimans and we are fond of them.  Any advice will be sincerely appreciated!  Thank you.

Answer
I would wait until the last week of Feb or the first of March to plant the tree outdoors. It has been inside and more than likely is not as hardened off as a tree grown outside and the cold may damage it.

When you dig the hole make it twice the size of the pot and fill with good top soil or potting soil and mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk (pine straw is good).  Do not fertilize for the first year to allow the roots to grow naturally.
