Question: Have had any experience using red and blue spectrum L.E.D. lighting instead of florescent lights for a highland nepenthes

Answer
Hi Kent,

No, I haven't experimented with LED lights as of yet.  My only concern is that those lights are very expensive.  So until they come down in price, I can't recommend them as a cost-effective alternative to fluorescent lights.

The other issue is whether or not LED lights can provide the necessary light intensity for optimal plant growth.  With Nepenthes, you want about 5000-6000 lumens.

In regards to light spectrum, red light is primarily used to stimulate flowers.  I'm not sure what the impact would be on pitcher production if you used only red lights.  Blue light stimulates foliage production, so you might get better pitcher production with blue light over red light.  For this reason, we recommend the cool white fluorescent lights over plant lights or full spectrum lights.
