indoor lighting for herbs

Question
Hello, I want to start growing herbs indoors.  I have been reading a little about flourescent lighting,  can I go to the local hardware store and buy some lights to  shine on the plants or does it have to be a special light for plants?  Any information would be so helpful.  Thanks

Answer
Melissa, you can either purchase gro-lights, which are fluorescent lights designed specifically for growing seedlings by simulating natural sunlight, or choose a less expensive alternative by placing one warm glow and one cool glow fluorescent bulb in a two bulb fixture.  Either product works great.

I personally grow over 500 seedlings under lights every spring.  Just keep in mind that the lights must be constantly adjusted to remain 3" above the seedlings.  This will prevent them from becoming leggy.  You also want to keep the lights on for 14 hours per day.  I use a timer just in case I would forget to turn them on or off at the right times.

I am also attaching a website that will give you some helpful hints on raising seedlings indoors.  I hope this helps.

Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
