pine needles?

Question
Do you recommend mixing pine needles into a soil mixture for carnivorous plants? Will this be helpful to my plants or will it harm them?
thank you for your help

Answer
Hi Sol,

While we recommend pine needles as a mulch for your carnivorous plants during the winter months, we don't recommend it in the soil mix.  Over time, especially in very moist conditions, the pine needles will breakdown and release nutrients, such as nitrogen, and resins into the soil, both of which are harmful to the roots of your plants.

Use only the recommended soil mixes for your plants, depending on the species you're growing.  For more information about soil mixes for various types of carnivorous plants, visit our care sheet section on our website:

Good growing!
