N. Sanguinea questions

Question
Hi is 5 hours of bright morning sun and around 10 hours of shade-light enough for this plant?  I keep it on a windowsill btw.  Also I'm going to be gone for 8 days on vacation and I have no one to water the plants.  Is it possible for me to leave a saucer of water under the plant?  Will it rot the roots?

Answer
Hi Chris,

Yes, that seems very fine for Nepenthes sanguinea.  I have a large Nepenthes sanguinea in my west window that gets the type of lighting you've described.  In fact, you can see a photo of it on our care sheet page for Asian pitcher plants:

With you being gone for 8 days could be a potential problem.  Avoid setting the plant in standing water.  This will cause more problems in the future.  Instead, use a self-watering system that you can purchase at your local garden center.  Just tell the folks there what you need and they'll help you locate it.

If none of the items available seems like it would work, then use the saucer method as a last resort.  Just keep the initial water level no higher than 1/3 way up the pot.  When you get back, remove any water left in the saucer and let the upper portions of the soil dry out a bit before you water again.

Good growing!
