Soil Change

Question
Good morning,
I am just wondering what you do with your soil from the previous year when it comes time for repotting.  I know your nursery is immense compared to my collection, but my garden is steadily growing larger, and I am just curious what you do with your soil or if you have any suggestions for me.  Thank you,
James

Answer
Hi James,

Yes, this can be a serious issue when you develop a very large collection.  Prior to 2005, we operated the nursery in Portland.  Fortunately, the city offered yard debris pickup.  Much of the old soil went into the yard debris bin.  Whatever didn't fit went into our garbage.  If we had a lot of it, we put them into bins and disposed of it at our grow location in the country.  At our current location, the property is large enough that we have a permanent compost pile along a hillside.

If your city doesn't offer yard debris pickup, then your best option is to take the used soil to a local landfill.

Good growing!
