vermiculite with cobras

Question
Hi,

I asked a question a few days ago in part about soil media for cobras. My question to you is whether or not vermiculite is okay to use for aeration in place of perlite or pumice. My only fear is that it could over time add minerals to the soil. Am I right to be cautious about using it as part of the soil mix?

Sincerely ,

Daniel Bunton

Answer
Hi Daniel,

I've used vermiculite successfully with Darlingtonia in the past.  They are used to a higher mineral content and higher pH in many situations than Sarracenia.  Just be sure they are being top-watered daily in hot weather.  Vermiculite does break down over time, so perlite is a safer choice long-term.

Good Growing!
