Very large plants & repotting

Question
I have several extremely large plants in my house and it would be very difficult to replant them - are there other things I can do to provide for the benefits of repotting? Several of these plants have hit the 9 foot ceilings I have and are in clay pots that probably weigh a couple of hundred pounds including the plant.

Answer
Michelle,

It is not time to repot tropical houseplants until after April 1st. Your very large plants need to be pruned.  If you let me know what plants you have and how large each is I will tell you how much you can prune off. There is no reason to repot a houseplant more often than once every 5 years unless you want the plant to grow larger and it sounds like you plants are large enough.

When it has been 5 years since a plant was repotted it can be romoved from the pot and about 2-4 inches of soil & roots trimmed off the sides and bottom of the rootball and fresh soil put in the bottom of the pots and around the sides of the rootball after replacing the plant. At the same  time prune at least 1/4 of the top back. Again, if you let me know what plants you have and how large each is I will tell you how much you can prune off now. Good luck.
