Saguaro fell over, arms broke off

Question
We also have a cactus that is a victim of the recent rains.  This time on 3.3 acres in NW Tucson.  The 2 small arms are about 1 foot long and broke off at the joint.  From your previous answer, it sounds like I should wait a month and then replant with shade.  Now for the parent.  It is about 12 foot tall.  The top 2 foot has split partially thru.  We have an old tractor with a bucket and a neighbor with a back hoe.  Do you think we could pick it back up?  If so, can you provide a procedure?  I was thinking of digging under it, wrap with carpet, add 2x4 supports held on by nylon straps.  How long would the supports need to be?

Answer
Kathy,

Do you think we could pick it back up?  You could try the tractor, but that can be pretty tricky unless you have done it before.

If so, can you provide a procedure?  It might be easier to dig the new hole (at least 18" deep) and lift the cactus into it using 4 to 6 people.

I was thinking of digging under it, wrap with carpet, add 2x4 supports held on by nylon straps.  If you use 3 2X4's, that should be able to support the weight (have a person at each end of the 2X4).

How long would the supports need to be? You wouldn't want them to extend more than 2 feet beyond the end of the cactus. Make sure they are perpendicular to the stem of the plant.

I would recommend that you hire someone to do it for you, but the above method should work should you decide to try it. Please be very careful and good luck.

Sincerely,

Greg
