The Verdict: Advanced Rot

A 6-year-old saguaro (2.5" diameter, 8" tall) browning and falling over indicates internal vascular collapse from root rot. Overwatering and poor drainage are the culprits. Rot often starts in roots and travels up invisibly for months.

Rescue Protocol

1. Unpot and inspect roots—healthy roots are white and firm.
2. Cut the green top (1.5") well above all brown tissue; ensure no discoloration in the cutting.
3. Let callous 1–2 weeks.
4. Repot in well-draining mix; stake if needed.
5. Discard the brown base—it's not salvageable.

Correct Watering Regime

• Water only when bone-dry, then thoroughly.
• Zero water October–March (winter dormancy).
• Keep in cool room during dormancy.
• Gradually resume watering in spring.
