dying kalanchoe

Question
I have a mature Kalanchoe that fell over in its pot, i think i may have waited too long to re-pot it because is only has one root now, either that or it got too cold and the roots died..either way its leaves are withered and limp, no longer thick or stiff.. since i have re-potted it deeper to support it better because it about two feet tall and there seems to be no improvement but its not any worse. is there any chance for it as a whole plant or should make cuttings?

Answer
Laci,

This plant is a succulent and should not be watered until it is very dry and light weight. The only time it needs more water is when it is in full bloom, then you should still wait till the surface of the soil is dry before watering.  It sounds to me like you overwatered it and the roots rotted.  It also should not have been repotted until after April 1st when the days are longer.

I assume it is done blooming and you want to carry it over and rebloom it next year which can be done. After a kalanchoe is finished blooming it should be cut down half way. Yes, you can use the cuttings to start new plants, they root fairly easily. This pruning will keep it from falling over as yours did and will also make it grow a lot bushier and produce more flowers next year.

I recommend that you prune it now and try using the prunings as cuttings to start new plants but also start allowing the original plant to get totally dry before you water it and if it is not too far gone it will then grow new roots and perk up. It should be in a location where it gets full sun all day long, it loves the sun.  That could be another reason it fell over, if it does not get enough sun it will get taller and scraggly reaching for the sun so then it is more likely to fall over.

So prune it and give it more sun and less water. Good luck.
