What do I have

Question
I bought a hanging basket this spring with lots of different flowers in it.  The hanging basket was not doing well, so I just put the different flowers into the ground.  One has done beautifully but I do not know what it is.  It is a low spreading green fern like leaf and has a brilliant purple flower that is about and inch or two off of the ground.  It spreads profusely.  What do I have? Is it an annual?  Thanks for any help.

Answer
Sheri,
It sounds like Verbena... is the flower round and made up of several small flowers in a cluster?  Verbena is an annual in all but the warmest of climates.  If it does not get below 45 degrees in the winter where you are, it may live through the winter.
all the best,
