rose rosette in coreopsis

Question
I recently removed 12 rose bushes due to rose rosette. I've also noticed that a couple of nearby coreopsis plants have the same witches broom characteristics in their leaf structure etc. Is this possible?  Should I pull them up?

Answer
Hi Valerie:
Highly unlikley that your coreopsis has rose rosette virus. These virus agents tend to be quite host specific, attacking only close plant relatives (maybe cousins ha-ha).

Many things can cause "witches broom" symptoms, including other viruses, genetic mutations, some insects and mites and even some types of herbicides (weed killers).  Your plant would need to be examined in a lab to confirm the causal agent.

If you have a lot of other healthy plants and don't want to take any chances of a disease spreading from the two, you can remove/replace the affected ones.  Be sure to bag up or destroy the affected ones.  Good sanitational practices can go a long way in prevention.
