brown edges on leaves

Question
I have a rose bush....I think it is a rugosa rose. The leaves are a beautiful light lime green to a dark lime green color. The leaves are starting to turn brown right along the edges of the leaves. Can you tell me what this could be?

Answer
Dear Cheyl, This actually sounds like the rose is not getting enough water.  It has been very dry lately even in the northern states, and that could be the problem.  I have plants that I water daily and I still have crispy leaves on some.  If the plant is in a pot, then that is almost surely the reason.  If it is in the ground, then there is a possibility that it could be a fungus, so you can spray with a good fungicide.  You could even use a systemic one for this since it isn't a food product.  I would first check to be sure that the rose was getting enough water, and then I would spray the plant with a good systemic fungicide, perhaps one containing proprioconozole.  Oh, one other thing I can think of that will definitely cause these symptoms is spraying with an herbicide like Roundup somewhere in the area.  It wouldn't have had to be you; your neighbors could have been spraying Roundup or a similar herbicide and the spray drifted to your area.  In that case, the symptoms will resolve and new leaves should be ok.  I hope this information helps, but be sure to write back if you have further questions.  Good luck, Melissa
