Calthea

Question
I have a Calthea Medallion. The edges keep turning brown and dry. I trim the brown edges off but it keeps getting worse. What can I do?
Thanks
Melina

Answer
Hi Melina
Calthea are high humidity plants. If the humidity in their environment is too low, the edges of the leaves become brown and dry. To raise the humidity put a tray filled with pebbles under the plant and fill the tray about halfway to the top of the pebbles with water. Also put the Calthea around other plants if you can. Plants transpire moisture and high humidity plants often benefit from the moisture coming off the plants around them. Also be careful not to overwater your Calthea as too much water will also cause leaf edges to turn brown.
When you trim the brown edges of the leaves be careful to trim off only the brown area. If you cut into the healthy part of the leaf that will cause the edges to turn brown.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask,
Tracy
