Are plants alive?

Question
Hi, I don't know if your the person to ask... but here goes, I made the mistake of buying grape vines, a fig and a Pecan tree from a flee market. When I opened the bag containg them there was sawdust in there and it was dry to the bone. Someone told me that if you cut the plant and it is green inside, it is still alive. The grapes were very green inside. The Pecan was green on the outside, and the fig had a white spongy material at the center and the bark was a little green, and it smelled really good. Are they dead? Should I stop wasting my time trying to grow them?

Thanks

Answer
The green you speak of is just under the bark. Take your finger nail or a small knife and starting near the top of the plant, scrape a small piece of bark off and if it is green then the plant is alive at this point of the branch IF brown contiue down the plant until you find green and prune off the brown part. If it is alive I would go ahead and plant them. Good luck!
