unwanted mushrooms

Question
hello!
I just got back from a my long weekend to find mushrooms growing in my potted succulent plant (i believe the short name for the plant is a zizi?). i watered the plant before i went away (i normally water it 1 to 2 a month)four days ago and now there are light beige mushrooms growing in the pot with the plant.
i have no clue what to do with them! do i pull them out? or spray them with something? and how do i avoid future mushrooms?
thanks!
melanie

Answer
Hi Melanie,

Mushrooms are nature's decomposers, and they are absolutely harmless.  The fungal spores find a humid environment in which to germinate.  As they grow they begin "digesting" the organic matter within the soil.  After a period of growth, a flush of water triggers the formation of aboveground mushrooms in which the future generation of spores is produced.

If the mushroom is unsightly, then simply pluck it out.  You will not be able to remove (or even detect) the subterranean portion of the fungus.
