Tree looks unhealthy

Question
I have a Palatka (also known as a Dahoon Holly).  I purchased the tree in September, 2007 from a local landscape nursery in Ocala, FL, where my family and I live. (Zone 9) This little tree was beautiful when it was planted in the ground in my back yard.  It looked very healthy with dark green leaves, and deep red berries all over it. We carefully followed the lanscapers directions on how to take care of the tree.  Approximate. 6 weeks back, the tree's leaves started turning yellow and the berries are now a washed out orange color.  There are no black spots on the leaves, but on the yellow ones that fell off there is a dark discoloration throughout the leaf.  My husband and I have looked the tree over carefully, called the landscaper and he stated it wasn't getting enough water.  Well, it is getting plenty of water. He said to water it more.  The dirt in my yard is a light tan sandy dirt.  Is it possible that my tree is dying?  Is there anything I can do to try and save it?  Thank you for any reply.

Answer
It could be that the Holly is getting ready to put on a new crop of leaves and young growth.  I wouldnt worry too much about the leaves on the ground with brown spots as long as the leaves on the bush dont have any.  I think there is a fertility or nutritional problem.  In your area, fertilizer washes from the root zone quickly and you have to apply fertilizer often.  I would get some shrub fertilizer and apply a light dose.  Wait about a week and see if the plant greens up any.  Also, I would get your soil tested for pH.  If the soil is alkaline, which I doubt it is, the tree could be iron deficient.  Your landscaper may have a pH meter at his place to test the soil, otherwise your county extension office can send in a sample for you to be tested.  Try these things and let me know your results.  Good Luck.
