asian pear tree problems

Question
some of the leaves on our asian pear tree are dieing and also are sticky.  The fruit looks pretty good but still small.  some of the leaves have brown spots.  I do not know how to care for fruit trees and I have not thinned the fruit yet.

Answer
Asian pears have somewhat of a normal stickyness to the leaves.  I would look on the undersides of leaves and on branches for small oval closely appressed structures that will probably be brown in color and can be scraped off with your fingernail.  If you find this the tree may have scale insects, which would cause the sticky leaves.  If you find these, I would treat the plant with Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide.  This product is mixed with water and poured on the soil around the base of the plant.  It is taken up systemically and will kill the bugs within a week or so.  It also provides protection from reinfestation for up to a year.  I hope this helps fix the problem.  Good Luck.
