white gummy stuff under basil leaves

Question
We noticed a white gummy, almost looks like spit, on the underside of a basil plant. Couldn't see any bugs or other critters, just a couple of places on the underneath sides of the leaves. Can you tell me if the whole plant should be destroyed, can I spray with a natural insecticide or just what is it? Thanks So much, Sam VanBibber

Answer
Sam:
If this stuff looks like spit, it may be an insect called Spittle Bug.  Check out Google Images for this insect and compare.  If you have just a few plants, consider removing them by hand.  The spittle is a protective "froth" in which the immature forms are inside.  The adult is called the Three-lined Spittle bug.

Hope this helps!!

Steve
