Disease on sago palm (Cycas)

Question
Fronds start to yellow and curl about 2-4 weeks after new growth. I live in SA 50kg outside Cape Town and temperatures currently are very high with very little rain.

Is there any treatment and if so what can one use?

Thanking you in anticipation.

Yours sincerely,

Dave Viljoen

Answer
Dave:
These plants are usually quite adapted to high temperatures and prefer lower water levels in the soil.  I don't know if it is in a container, but the soil needs to be very well drained (lots of sand)these plants don't do well in water-logged soils that have a lot of clay in them.  Ideally, they like moist/well drained soils- so check on the soil moisture issue first.  The symptoms that you described do not sound like an  bona fide infectious disease, but rather an unfavorable soil related condition. It may be merely a nutrient situation.  May be a good idea to check it over for any insects, especially scales -located on the leaves.

Hope you had a great holidays! It is 19 F outside here today!!

Regards
Steve
