Japanese plum tree disease

Question
I have a Japanese plum tree (the second one) that seems to have a type of woodpecker holes around the trunk.  Year before last we lost one to the same disease. Now our new one, a couple or threee years old has the same thing and I'm afraid of losing it too.  Do you have any sugesstionos as to what it is and how to treat it.

Answer
Hi Daniel,  Sounds like borers in it.  You would need to use an insecticidal spray.  I had borers in my Erythrina trees and gave it a spray of Atomic Grow right into the holes and they are all gone now.  I was down to two main stems before I realized what it was and now it is starting to send out new branching.  I would drench it with the product using 4 teaspoons per gallon and then spray the trunk and branches. Atomic Grow is organic.  Or you could hunt the shelves at the stores for a borer drench, most of which are poison, I do not think you eat anything off your plum tree, I believe it is ornamental.   kathy
