very mature hedges 7-8 feet tall experiencing dieback.  smaller hedges nearby doing the same.

Hey Larry:
Several possibilities. One is there may be a disease organism killing those twigs. Suggest pruning out and disposing of the dead portions and reshaping the hedge. Make sure they are getting ample water and roots have plenty of room to grow outward.
