Green Fungus on Tree Limbs. Killing Trees

Question
i have several sweetgum trees in my yard (located in Midland GA on the NE side of Columbus).  They seem to have developed what looks like a mint green fungus that is covering the branches and trunk, it is spreading from tree to tree.  Once it attacks a tree it covers the tree all the way to the top and then a green moss like structure begins to grow and the tree dies.  It usually takes about a year to happen.  Any idea what this is? I have a wooded 2 acre lot and its spreading.  It seems to completely avoid an type of pine.

Answer
Hi Rob,  Do you by chance have webworms that make a tent on the trees.  I know my sweetgum here gets webworms in FL.  I call them tent caterpillars?  They could kill a young or sick tree.  You would have to use a spray to rid of the pests.  If it is a fungus or bugs you could use Atomic Grow which would correct either problem.  Bugs and fungus attack sick trees and plants, just like a human with an immune imbalance.  kathy
