What is this growing underneath jacaranda tree?

Question
Identification
Identification
QUESTION: I found this root like plant underneath the topsoil about an inch or two (not very deep) located close to a 15 year jacaranda tree and an asparagus fern.  Could you identify it? It has bulb like growths which contain a fluid. It seems to be pretty prolific - so I am wondering if it is a type of tree rot. It killed a ruellia plant and a beautiful patch of deer grass recently (it was found underneath both dead plants).

ANSWER: Hi Sharon:
These look like the small tubers that are normally found on the roots of the asparagus fern. They store food/nutrients for harsh growing conditions.  We had this plant in FL.  It can be intrusive in some areas.

Using your computer, "Google Images" of asparagus fern roots to see these structures.

Steve

QUESTION: Hi Steve,

I am so glad I asked you this question - thank you! I have two dogs and I googled the asparagus fern root/tubers and discovered not only are they considered a noxious weed that can kill other plants nearby - but the fern is toxic to dogs! My question is: if I pull out the asparagus ferns, will the root/tubers die by themselves or do I need to dig up all the roots as well?

Answer
Sharon:
You've got me stumped on your question. I'm not sure what to tell you.  Since these plants can be a pain, I'd be inclined to tell you to try to dig up as much as you can.

P.S. They do (in my opinion) make nice hanging basket plants where we can keep them confined.

Enjoy,

Steve
