diseased hydrangea

Question
I moved my potted hydrangea and noticed little white worm appearing bugs moving around in the soil left on the patio. There are also brown spots on the leaves. What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Answer
Andrea,

The little white wormy bugs are probably the larval stage of an insect.  My guess is some type of ants.  If so, the worker ants will come along and move the larvae to a new location.  Did you observe any ants in the area?  They love to raise their babies under potted plants since it is protected and often moist.

As for the leaf spot, it is not associated with the insects.  There are several fungi that can cause leafspots on hydrangea.  I recommend you read the factsheet at the following web address which discusses some of the more frequent problems with hydrangea.  Without more information, I cannot determine which particular leaf spot you might have.

Good luck!
