biting midges

Question
We like to go fossil and rock hunting and are moving to Southeastern Utah. We heard there are biting midges in some parts of Utah. Can you tell me more exact locations and times of year where and when we might run into these critters?

Answer
Loree,

Biting midges can occur almost anywhere there is damp ground such as a spring. The good news is that midges are not strong fliers so if you move away to drier (higher) ground the midges are usually less of a problem. Take a look at this page http://www.livingwithbugs.com/swe_itch.html for general information about a biting midge that affects horses.

Insect repellents work well for midges. Take a look at this page http://www.livingwithbugs.com/mos_repe.html for information about repellents including new formulations.
