whats this bug

Question
Sorry i dont have a picture, On a Potato plant, I noticed some Fire Ants hanging around with some small bugs, the color of Green aphids, but they were longer, like double the length, and they had about 2 black spots on theyre backs, one near the head and one near the tail- lengthwise, not side by side. There were quite a few, and they appear to be sucking the plants juices. Thank you very much. BTW i live in florida zone 9

Answer
Shelly,

There are many insects that fit this description. The fire ants were probably there to collect honeydew that is produced by insects like aphids and their close relatives. The only way to get a reliable identification is with a picture. An option, however, would be to take a few to your local county Cooperative Extension office and talk with one of the Master Gardener (google "Master Gardener + your state name + your county name").
