bug found in sofa

Question

bug from sofa
Hi Jack,
I am in Chicago, Il. I bought a used sofa from a home with a cat. When I inspected it, I found a bug between cushions. It is about 1/16 inch long. I am really worried, because I don't know how many of them still hide in the sofa, whether they bite human and transmit diseases. I have a one-year-old son. I don't want him risk for it. Could you please tell me what it is? Should I throw the sofa, and what treatment (like sprays) I should apply to my home. Really appreciate it!

Lee

Answer
Lee,

This is a spider beetle and they are minor stored product pests, they'll infest things like cereal, spices and dry pet food but they don't bite or are otherwise harmful. They also feed on dead insects so can be pests in museums. Cleaning is usually the only treatment that is needed. Used furniture can introduce a variety of insects into the home including cockroaches and bed bugs so be cautious of the furniture's origin.
