Weeds in my Redapple iceplant (Aptenia Cordiflora)

Question
I live in Fallbrook California, Much of the slopes on my porperty are covered with  Red Apple Iceplant (Aptenia Cordiflora). 100's of square ft.  I have a problem with grass and weeds. Is there anything that I can spray on the grass and weeds that will kill the weeds but not my Red Apple? I have used Ortho Weed-b-Gon and it works on the dandelions but not the stuff that looks like grass which I thought were weeds but must be some type of grass. Can you help me?
Thanks Jerry S.

Answer
Hi Jerry,
The Apentia belongs to a family of plants called Aizoaceae which is classified as a 'dicot'. This plant can actually be hurt by products like Ortho Weed-Be-Gon (which target dicots as opposed to grasses which are monocots). It may be it's waxy coating which has kept it safe, but my recommendation is to stop using Weed-Be-Gon or other broadleaf weed control products as Apentia is also a broadleaf plant.

Unfortunately, there are no home owner approved herbicides which selectively targets monocots (grasses) and leave dicots (broadleaf plants).

I recommend mulching in between the iceplants with a 1-2" layer of shredded hardwood mulch. This should keep the weeds to a minimum
