weeds in lawn`

Question
QUESTION: I live in Bowie, Maryland between DC and Annapolis.  I have mostly weeds in my lawn.  I would like to cut down on the amount of weeds, but don't like using weed be gone to spray the weeds in the yard.  And don't know what kind of grass seed to use in this area of Maryland.

ANSWER: I'd recommend first spraying the weeds heavily with vinegar in order to knock them out.  If you really soak them, it should do the trick.  Next, till them under into the soil.  Then I'd recommend sodding with a Tall Fescue sod.  It's a good grass for your area, and the sod will provide an immediate thick lawn to help keep the weeds out.

You'll probably still get some weeds coming through, but I don't think it'll be too bad.

Good luck!

QUESTION: my followup is:  I don't have the money right now to sod.  Any other suggestions.  I am by myself right now and am trying to take care of my house, a swimming pool and the yard.  Thanks.

Answer
Then I'd recommend not worrying about the weeds.  You could knock them out with a weed killer, but I understand if you want to avoid that.  So, just rent a core aerator or a slice seeder and go over the lawn a few times with Tall Fescue seed.  It'll fill in the lawn nicely if it gets enough water.  Though there will be weeds still, they'll just be mixed in with decent grass and won't be quite so noticeable.

Good luck!
