Lawn maintenance,weed killer,watering

Question
Hi, my name is Matt. I live in Phoenix, AZ. I have recently had a lawn put in my back yard, My house was cotton fields 2 years ago so I have a huge problem with weeds, mostly nut grass, no broad leaf issues (not yet at least)I have been using a product called "Manage" from my local nursery, It seems to work well on my desert land scaping but not in the grass, Do you have any recomendations. I have  bermuda/rye turf lawn in back. Also how often do you recomend watering. I have heard generally you want to water about 6-12'' once mabey twice a week. I started to do that but now my grass is  starting to turn brown. I am not sure if that is caused by the winter lawn dieing out. I fertilize the yard once every three months. Thank you for your time, sorry for the long email, Thanks---- Matt

Answer
Matt,

The brown turf is likely because of the ryegrass dying out.  The Bermudagrass should start to green up soon.  Manage will work well on the nutsedge but you have to stay on a regular program of 10-14 days for at least 3 applications.

Broadleafs are better controlled with a Trimec or SpeedZone.

Water deep and infrequent.  I would be very suprised if you can get 6-12 inches of water to penetrate the soil without loosing 50% or more due to surface runoff.  Water till the rootzone is saturated, not till you have applied 6 inches.  Re-water when you start to see signs of wilt.

I hope this helps.  Good Luck,
