dead zoysia

Question
I had a new zoysia sod lawn installed last June. In September a lawn care company erroneously treated my lawn with fertilizer, pre-emergent and post-emergent twice in three days. The lawn died. They claim it had nothing to do with their treatments but was due to shade. Most of the lawn gets 2-3 hours full sun. But even the areas in full sun died. They said it would come back in spring. Well, nothing so far but lots of weeds. Can you help me with some information?

Answer
it depends on where you live. i'm in southern NJ.
here zoysia will not grow well in the shade(does better in full sun). in warmer climates(Carolinas & south) it will do better in partial shade. it really doesn't need much fertilizer compared to cool weather grasses. a double shot of fertilizer w/in 3 days could hurt it severely. call the lawn care company and tell them to correct their mistake. most advertize a no quibble guarantee. they owe you a lawn if they fertilized 2x's in a week. they should know that. depending what they used ...that much nitrogen could kill your lawn, especially if it was hot(80 & above).
