yard/lawn

Question
I have been finding piles of dirt on the edges of my yard/lawn and I can't figure out what is causing it....it's not a dog. The piles are aprox. 8" wide and about 4" high....so could it be a mole or some kinda rodent? and are they in the grass? under the cement sidewalk? It's quite disturbing/wierd.
Thanks

Answer
Moles burrow along tunnels which they excavate as they search for insects underground. On the surface their efforts show up as long trails of mounded up earth. They are difficult to get rid of as long as there is a population of insects for them to eat.
