Question -
Hello,

I have a grassy weed on my lawn in southern NJ. I think it may be either barn grass, or nutsedge, but it grows like wildfire, easily an inch per day, generally straight up, and is a shae lighter green than the lawn.  Any tips on how to remove this?

Answer -
Hey Steve, Sorry to ask the obvious but can you pull it out?  Does it seem to grow in a clump, does it have a taproot, does it have rhizomes, is it spreading?  Sounds evil.  rsvp

Answer
Yellow Nutsedge can be viewed at the University of California at Davis website(www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7432.html) and Barnyard Grass (Echinochloa crusgalli) can be id'd at Oregon University website (ippc2.orst.edu/mint/barngrass.htm).  Lots of new, noxious weeds are appearing in gardens everywhere, thanks to a shift in climates and establishment of alien species.

I don't believe in using chemicals for numerous reasons that many Americans don't seem to understand, but I encourage you not to try anything like Roundup or Weed B Gone.  These will wipe out signs of life in your soil and wreck the natural balance.

There are several Organic herbicides you can try on the internet.  Annuals can be controlled very effectively with corn gluten.  Try products at Dirtworks (www.dirtworks.net/default.html) and Biconet(www.biconet.com/catalog/lawn.pdf#search='organic%20weed%20killer%20barnyard%20grass') to see which one(s) work best for you.

You can also try the do-it-yourself identification of alien weeds in the garden at the Virginia Tech website (www.ppws.vt.edu/weedindex.htm).  They will walk you through a thorough description of your weed until you (hopefully) find the right one(s).

Good luck,
