weeds

Question
I planted a new Ryegrass lawn about a month ago and it looks beautiful except for a few weed spots. One of the weeds is crabgrass and the other one I can't identify. It is round and does not bloom flowers. My neighbor calls it "pig weed" but not sure of the proper name. I want to apply weed killer to the lawn but not sure which kind to get. I live in So. CA. If you know of any sites that can help I would really appreciate it. I tried a couple but no luck. Thabk you so much for your time.

Answer
It certainly might be Pigweed. If it is growing along the ground it is probably Prostrate Pigweed, Amaranthus blitoides. Many of the Amaranthus (pigweeds) are native to western North America but have become abundant across the country. They are often weeds in turf stands although primarily a weed associated with agriculture.
Most pigweeds are chemical sensitive so control should be rather easy.
A good web site to assist you in identification might be www.psu.missouri.edu/fishel/ornamentals.html another option is type in amaranthus and just do a web search for the genus name.
