Shady lawn patch

Question
I have a patch of lawn off my patio of about 4 x 10, that runs the length of the patio that is very shaded with mature trees and very compact dirt.  I have luck getting grass to grow in the early summer/late spring but as soon as it dries and gets hot the grass dies and I'm at it again next year.  I'm thinking of turning this portion of the yard into a shade garden but it needs to be suitable for high traffic, barbecuing and dogs.  What would you recommend?

Answer
Try a ground cover such as pathysandra and vinca minor. These will tolorate some traffic (dogs) but not regular walking on. YOu can supplement with stepping stones (flag stones or round concrete stepping stones for example).
This will give a "nature" feel while still allowing traffic. You can also cover the area with hardwood mulch or even stone mulch if you prefer.

I think you are right in not trying to grow grass there. It will likely continue to be a constant fight which will likely not succeed.
