Rose of Sharon shrubs

Question
Hi Lynnette, I have a rose of sharon that I would like to split and start new growth from, is this possible?

Thank you.

Answer
I only answer questions on roses even though this shrub is called The Rose of Sharon, it isn't a rose. However here is your answer on how to divide this plant. You can divide this shrub but it is best done in the fall when the leaves are dying down.  Cut the shrub back to about 18 inches tall, then dig the root ball up and cut into half or more if the shrub is a large one.  Just make sure these sections have roots attached to them and plant all of these sections.  They should develop into new shrubs by next Spring.  Mulch them well with any type of mulch you have in your area such as bark mulch or plain soil, water well and then leave them alone until spring. In the spring when they start to grow, give them some fertilizer to help them along.
