Rose of Sharon Not Thriving

Question
After over-watering and killing my last plants, I purchaed new ones in August of last year.  The new ones did well and made it through the winter OK.  They have leaves, however, they are small and have not continued to "bush out".  They are not dying, they are just not growing.  I am making sure not to overwater, or to get too dry, and have provided them with root stimulator solutions when I do water.  Although I mulched adequately when I planted them, they are planted in heavy clay soil.  I know they do grow out here in the Utah semi-desert because I see many of them thriving.  Do you have any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Stephanie,

I would recommend trying to amend the soil in the vacinity of the plants. Use a soil auger to dig holes in the area and back fill with either sand or peat moss. This will help to open up the soil and increase root growth into these areas.

I would also recommend putting down an organic granular fertilizer to help further encourage growth.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
