Question
Just out of curiosity what is the seed you recommend to put in a lawn in Westchester, N.Y.  The lawn is total sun except for a small shadow in the late morning from a large tree.

Answer
Kentucky Bluegrass, my friend, is the seed to lead.

This popular turfgrass is American as apple pie.  They've been selling Kentucky Bluegrass for decades.  It dominates seed sales for home lawns, private grounds, public parks and athletic fields.  Most golf fairways are paved with Kentucky Bluegrass.

Back in the late 1960s, Bluegrass was falling out of favor.  It needed a high mowing height.  It was susceptible to summer patch, leafspot and necrotic ring spot.  It had low tolerance for traffic.  Golfers didn't like playing on it.  And fairway turf managers disliked the way weeds overran their carefully cultivated Kentucky Bluegrass greens year after year.

But research continued in small labs around the country.  Hundreds of Kentucky bluegrass introductions have come and gone during the last half century.  Newer cultivars are aggressive and denser, they boast stronger rhizome systems, and they can take plenty of divot damage.  They thrive with infrequent, deep watering.  You will love it in Westchester.

My seed purveyors are internet-based (www.seedland.com).  I just find a better selection and you can't beat the onvenience.
