lawnmowers

Question
What kind of push mower? Do you actually get the lawn mowed with one of those?  How old is it?  I sort of like the idea, very old fashioned, but the last one I saw was in a garage about 30 years ago and it was worthless.

I want to get a lawnmower on sale @ Home Depo.  Do you have some guidance please?
-----Answer-----
Consumer Reports rates gas and electric mowers.  Yard-Man Model 11A-439Q was rated a gas model Best Buy at $200.  Black & Decker CMM 1000 electric lawnmower ranked tops, retailing for around $430.  Owners of Lawn-Boy, Yard-Man, Snapper and Sears Craftsman models fault those brands for most frequent repairs.

My preferred mower is a manual push mower.  They do the best job of all in my book.  The ultimate machines are purchased online; you can probably get a good offseason deal on these units right now.  Prices vary so search carefully for the best prices.

Answer
Clean Air Gardening (www.cleanairgardening.com) sells a mower called the Brill Lexus 38 - of which Clean Air says: "This precision designed machine is, in our opinion, the Mercedes of reel lawnmowers".  Seedland says this is "Engineering excellence in a human-powered implement."  It was just over 16 lbs. and the blades need sharpening rarely.

It's currently on sale at Seedland.com and Clean Air Gardening and Seedland.com for the low low price of $199.99, plus s/h.  That's barely 10% off their usual price.  At this time of year I consider that an insult.

The online "Brill National Outlet" website(wynterway.tripod.com/hedlundacehardware/id28.html) will sell you one for $189.99 - but that includes shipping.

"People Powered Machines", a service that Consumer Reports calls "the best site for push reel mower research", is selling it for $179.99, which includes shipping.

Amazon.com had it on sale not long ago for $149.99.  But they are currently out of stock.

Keep in mind that if you have a reel push mower, you can't let the grass get too high.  A week of rain doesn't get you a free pass - that grass will grow as high as an elephant's eye, and this mower will not get the job done no matter how much you push it.  For this situation, I also own a Black and Decker electric lawnmower, and my teenage daughter takes care of that long grass when it's too tall to push-mow.  Believe me, you need an alternative method.
