lavender spreading

Question
Hi,
The former owners of our house had lavender in two flower
gardens on the lawn. The lavender is spreading everywhere.
Is there anything I can do to control this?
By the way, I am not a fanatic about lawns. In fact, I have
wild strawberries growing and for a part of the summer(now)
I do not mow to give some shade to the berries. The jam is
the best in the world.
Also, the lavender is not so bad,if there was not so much of it. Especially when you are mowing, the smell is great.
Thanks for your time and have a nice evening.
Brad

Answer
Hi Brad;
Sorry, I can't tell you how to get rid of the lavender. Sure wish you lived in my town. I would come over and harvest it all for you.
HEY!!! check with health fopod stores in your area that also carry herbs for aroma therapy. You might find a market for your lavender, if you are interested.
You don't want to get rid of all of it. It repels mosquitoes and houseflies, and some other insects, and it is VERY relaxing to scent your room with to help you get a good night's sleep.
I have a large pot of lavender in a container at each doorway to repel houseflies from coming in when the doors are open.
You could mow it very short, and put some black plastic over it, weight it down with stones to keep it from blowing away, and that should cook the lavender and kill it in just a few days. I would leave the plastic for about a week.
You don't want to use landscape fabric as that lkets air through. You want to kill the lavenbder with heat. Or you can put black plastic bags over the individual plants and tie the bottom shut and that will kil it.
Strong white vinegar will kill it, but that will also keep grass from growing there this year. I pour white vinegar on my grass that comes up in sidewalk cracks etc.
Putting the plastic over just what you want to kill, and keep a nice patch of it to have to walk through and smell. After you get what you want killed out, put an edge aroud it to keep it contained. I would use some of the metal edging, and sove it completely into the ground, and than put a brick border on top of that, and you will have a nice lil flower garden.
