poison ivy growths

Question
poison ivy growths
poison ivy growths
I see these bushy growths fairly often on poison ivy. They are still around in the winter, looking like clumps of fiber, but as you can see in the photo they are green and kind of leafy originally. Most plants don't have them, so I figure they must be a disease or gall or something. Any ideas? The photo is from September in New Jersey.

Answer
I do not really know but it could be lichens or possible the stem of flowers that did not make berries. Either way Most folks just kill the poison ivy as soon as they can to keep from getting infected by the plant. I would recommend that you spray the plants with Roundup herbicide when  the plant is green .
