Question
I live one block from the beach in the New York area. My lawn gets a lot of hot sun during the summer and no matter how often I water (deeply 2-3 times a week) it develops    yellowing patches which don't even respond to extra water. Is there anything I can do right now in the middle of summers' heat?

New York -- Cool Season Grass Country.  Current weather stats don't even begin to describe the kind of egg-frying, steak broiling, water boiling weather you and I are dealing with this year.

I'd normally just pop the question back to you with the response: Please tell me what kind of Grass you have.

I'd normally probably bring up the Soil Test order: Get one.  Now.

But it's 100 degrees out there.  This isn't the Mojave desert.  This is New Yawk.  We don't get triple digit temperatures with 100 percent humidity in New Yawk except on Blacktop.  These days, however, you get these temps with every breath you take.

Grass can't take this heat either.  Watering will cool it off, but only temporarily.  In this weather, Grass must bite the bullet.  Natural mechanisms switch metabolism OFF when the thermometer hits around 80 degrees.  Water it and you can push it higher, but in this heat, the best thing for the Grass is to LEAVE IT ALONE.  Water it just to keep the blades from TOASTING.  Don't fertilize it, either... you'll damage it and inspire Fungus Spores to grow all over it when you water.

I did take notice that you are watering deeply.  Sounds like you're not even watering too much -- if this Lawn was in active growth.  But this is New Yawk, and in New Yawk, Grass won't grow in this weather.  There is simply nothing you can do to make Cool Season Grass play house in temps this hot.  Nothing.
